On 18th October, Essar Projects PNG added yet another feather in its cap as they commissioned the works for strengthening of existing Runway, Pavements and Taxiways of the Kagamuga Airport at Mount Hagen, Papua New Guinea (PNG) and handed over the same to the National Airports Corporation (NAC), PNG. The Pavement Strengthening Project renders the Airport capable of accommodating the large Aircrafts like the Boeing 747.
Speaking to EMTV (PNGâs oldest and largest Television Network), NAC Acting Managing Director, Mr Ephraim Wasem said that the Project completion will ensure longevity of the Runway and also enable the Airport to cater to the higher demands of air travel at peak period.
The project is part of NACâs objective to ensure that all the National Airports operate in a secure environment. EPPNG was awarded the Mount Hagen Airport Project contract in January 2018. Apart from strengthening of existing runway of length 2490m, apron, aircraft pavements and taxiways, the scope of works also includes construction of a new Air Traffic Controller Tower, Fire Station, Staff Houses and Maintenance of Airport Yard and Workshop at Kagamuga Airport â which are expected to be completed around March 2021.
Mount Hagen being the second busiest commercial airport in PNG, project execution entailed all the challenges associated with an operational airport construction. It was also considered as a high-risk job due to continuous operations on the runway and frequent heavy rainfalls due to high altitudes. Despite the challenges, EPPNG Team successfully completed the runway project without any issues. The handover of the project was finalized ahead of the stipulated Completion Period.
Essar Projects has established its position as a prominent EPC player in PNG by executing challenging projects like Komo Airport, Kapal Haus Provincial Headquarters, Jimi High Altitude Road, Mugamamp Bridge, etc. It continues to be an exemplary safety icon by achieving a cumulative safe man-hours of 9,543,612 Hrs, without any mishaps, since 2010. EPPNG is a torchbearer for Best HSE Practices in the country through its various training programmes like Safety Training, HIV Awareness Training etc.
